Historical Development of Nursing Timeline International Council of Nurses (ICN) definition of nursing is - â€Å"collaborative care of individuals of all ages, families, groups and communities, sick or well and in all settings. Nursing includes the promotion of health, prevention of disease, and the care of ill, disabled and dying people. Advocacy, promotion of a safe environment, research, participation in shaping health policy and in patient and health systems management, and education are also key nursing roles† (International Council of Nurses, 2014). Florence Nightingale is considered to be the most influential person in nursing. Maslow’s theory serves as a framework for various nursing models to this day (Maslows Theory of Needs, 2013). The 1950s-1970s became to be known as the era of research and graduate education in nursing. Nurse researchers developed nursing knowledge with the goals of improving the quality of patient care, style of practice, and recognition of nursing as a profession (Alligood, 2014). Work of Hildegard Peplau described the theory of Interpersonal relations in 1952 that focused on the core concept of relationship between the nurse and the patient. Dorothy Johnson described Behavioral Systems model in 1968 for efficient and effective behaviors to prevent illness. Sister Callista Roy proposed Adaptation Model in 1970 that described different types of stimuli and how patients adapt to that said stimuli. Four adaptive models came to be that are physiological, self-concept, role function, and interdependence (George, 2011). Betty Neuman’s 1970 System model described nursing role of how to help return a person to their equilibrium. Neuman’s model was followed by Dorothea Oremâ₠¬â„¢s theory of self-care in 1971 build up on systems model. Self-care theory focused on helping individual meet his or her own goals by giving independence of self-care and returning ownership of care to the patient (George, 2011).
